Unfolding Magic: The Bird’s Eye Brilliance of Flat Lays
A flat lay is a bird’s eye view of a lot of magic possibilities about to unfold before you.
At its simplest, it is a picture of objects arranged on a flat surface being viewed from above. But it is so much more!
When used in Interior Design, a flat lay creates endless possibilities for creating a perfect space.
A flat lay is an idea filled with possibilities.
As an example, here is a flat lay I created that was inspired by the beauty of Pintail duck and eagle feathers. Being a wildlife biologist in a past career, I think birds provide endless inspiration for creating beautiful designs!
I started with art of feather details. Then I selected samples of flooring, tile, carpeting, fabrics and more that I thought looked nice with the art and arranged them.
What room will this become? Who knows, the possibilities are endless.
Will the room have all these exact tiles, fabrics, woods, etc.? Probably not. It is just an idea to build on.
Other Bird Feather Inspired Flat Lays
I created two additional flat lays that were also inspired by bird feathers. The first seems like a cross between Hollywood Glam and Bohemian waiting to happen.
The second seems like more of a Modern Global/Bohemian Style.
What rooms do you envision these flat lays inspiring?
See my next article, Birds of a Feather- What Birds Can Teach Us About Designing the Perfect Room and see the designs that came from these flat lays.
Are You Ready to Create Your Perfect Space?
Are you ready to create your perfect space? I assume you are since you are reading my blog post. Let’s tell your unique story and find the alignment of art, science, and energy that makes you happy. Let me help you take that trip to your perfect space in a Ferrari instead of a stagecoach. Try my Aligned Design consultation and let’s get started.
Our intrinsic desire to connect with nature and living entities is encapsulated in the term “biophilia.” Coined initially by Erich Fromm and later popularized by Edward O. Wilson, this concept has found a renewed emphasis in contemporary interior design.
Throughout history, our bond with nature has been pivotal, not only for sustenance and survival but also for spiritual rejuvenation and inspiration. Nature, in all its splendor, offers a plethora of colors, shapes, patterns, and textures that have always intrigued our aesthetic senses. Beyond the visual delight, nature nourishes our well-being. Plants, for instance, not only beautify our spaces but purify our air and offer sensory pleasures. Similarly, our reverence for animals can be traced back through art, religion, and their cherished presence in our lives as companions.
My personal journey as a wildlife biologist for 33 years, trekking the terrains of Arizona and Alaska, deepened my appreciation for nature’s designs. Be it the intricate patterns of plant parts under a microscope or the harmonious color schemes, I’ve often been inspired by nature’s unparalleled creativity.
In an ever-evolving technological world, the essence of biophilia reminds us of the solace nature provides. So, the question is, how can we bring this comforting connection to nature into our homes through interior design?

Natural Materials
Opt for eco-friendly and sustainable materials in both your construction and interior design choices. Discover more in my article on Eco-Friendly Interior Design. Embrace nature by integrating unique finds from your outdoor excursions – think branches, rocks, or shells – into your home decor. Elevate your space with indoor plants that not only beautify but also purify. Enhance your home’s synergy with the outdoors by strategically landscaping visible from your interiors. Design outdoor sanctuaries that beckon you outside. Seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces with design choices and window placements that frame nature as living art.

Plants
Incorporate native plants in your garden to not only attract local wildlife but also ensure sustainability. These indigenous species are tailored to thrive in local conditions, ensuring they’re resilient and eco-friendly by preventing the spread of invasive species that could harm native ecosystems. On my Alaskan adventures, I’ve handpicked native perennials like wild roses, blueberries, and geraniums, which beautify my garden, attract wildlife, and even offer delicious treats. Indoors, adorn your space with houseplants that enhance aesthetics and purify the air. Choose flowering varieties for a burst of vibrant color!
Animals
For many, including me, a home feels incomplete without the affection of a pet. Their presence greatly enhances our overall well-being. When designing interiors, consider pet-friendly choices that not only facilitate but celebrate life with animals. Opt for durable upholstery and washable rugs to minimize pet-related wear and tear, reducing any stress that may come with adding a furry friend. Moreover, cultivate an outdoor space that’s both visually pleasing and teeming with life. Plant flora that captivates the senses and invites wildlife. Thoughtfully positioned plants near windows can provide natural ‘entertainment’, as you watch birds, butterflies, and pollinators drawn to your garden.
Living with pets feels great and can be easy with the right design elements. Photo from Unsplash.
Color
Incorporate nature’s hues into your home’s interior and exterior. As a certified color strategist, I’ve often drawn inspiration from the landscaping colors of clients’ gardens, converting them into paint shades for walls, front doors, or interior palettes. Think of the calming blues of the sky, lush greens, earthy browns, muted grays, and soft off-whites. Highlight with vibrant shades inspired by garden blossoms in pinks, purples, yellows, and reds or the autumnal tones of foliage like golds and oranges. While stark black and pure white are rare in nature, they can accentuate and uplift these natural shades. And remember, if a color dominates your view—even from a neighboring property—it’s worth integrating into your decor palette.
In this home the color of the front door was created from measuring the colors of the roses in front of the house. The home is adjacent to the ocean, so the exterior color and metal art of sea gulls connects it to the surroundings. Color palette by Northern Lights Home Staging and Design.
Art
Get great photos of your outdoor adventures that evoke the feeling you had while you were there for art.
Consider art that shows landscapes, plants, animals or other natural elements that bring you joy and work with your design and color palette.
Incorporate energy art that connects energetically and spiritually to nature.

Scents
Scents can have a huge impact on the way you feel.
Try a diffuser with natural oils of lavender, orange or other scents related to herbs or fruits to make the connection through smell.
Flowering plants add a beautiful scent to your indoor space.
Avoid products that emit harmful odors.
Lighting
Use full spectrum bulbs to get the quality of natural daylight, especially in northern climates where light can be very limited in the winter. Living in Alaska, I can personally attest that they work and affect your mood.
Lots of strategically placed windows provides an abundance of natural light.

Get the Look and Feel Good
Even amidst urban sprawl, it’s entirely possible to forge a natural sanctuary in your living space. Let’s explore how I transformed rooms with views of nothing but an adjacent brick building into rejuvenating havens. By leveraging earthy tones like greens, blues, and browns, incorporating artwork showcasing flora and fauna, and introducing real plants, I managed to evoke a “feel-good” ambiance that resonates with the calming embrace of nature.

How can you use Aligned Energy Art in your space?
I created this Edesign, or virtual design as an example of how you could use this art to remind yourself to maintain gratitude in life and so to attract abundance.
How “Gratitude” Art Can Change Your Life
Integrating art that carries a meaningful message like “Gratitude” can deeply enrich your space. Here’s why:
Personal Connection: Art that resonates with your values makes your home feel more personal and can remind you daily of what’s important.
Flexible Placement: Listen to your intuition when deciding where to place your artwork. It could be in your living room, meditation space, or workout area – wherever you spend time and need inspiration.
Versatile Usage: Because this is digital art, it can be used in a variety of ways beyond traditional wall decor. Imagine starting your day with a reminder of gratitude on your coffee mug, or doing yoga next to a throw pillow with your favorite art piece.
Inspires Transformation: Seeing a message of gratitude every day can inspire personal growth. You can reflect on this as you enjoy your morning coffee, write in your journal, or practice yoga.
So, embrace art that speaks to you. It’s a beautiful way to make your home more meaningful and inspire daily reflection on the things that matter most to you.
Aligned Energy Art is another layer of meaning beyond the visual beauty in creating your perfect space that is aligned with who you want to be.
What is Fractal Art?
Fractal art is a type of digital art created with mathematical algorithms. I use specialized software to generate intricate patterns with vibrant colors and detail. By zooming and panning, I can explore infinite variations within the fractal. Once satisfied, I render the final image.
Fractal art combines science and art to produce mesmerizing and visually stunning designs.

Saturday Night Live Art Shows- “Qi” Aligned Energy Art
Welcome to Saturday Night Live Art Shows. In this show, I am sharing my “Qi” Aligned Energy Art series and an Edesign of a living room I created to highlight them and express their energy in a space.
Everything is energy. Qi is the life force that runs through us all.
Fractals, as in this art, are an expression of Qi in perfect harmony. Fractals are a visualization of the building blocks of life.
When Qi is blocked in our body, it affects our health and well-being.

Where the mind goes, Qi flows.
You create your life by what you think about.
Surround yourself with art that reminds you what is important and enhances the energy of your space.

I am excited to share some new energy art portraits I created for artist Sheryl Benjy, and give you a glimpse into how these pieces of art are created that show your energy when you “Shine Your Light”. These are sacred geometry designs I create using fractal art to express your unique energy signature that we can feel but not see. This inspiration comes from my intuition and reading your energy from photos, words you give me of how you and others would describe you and your favorite colors.

When You Shine Your Light, What Does Your Energy Look Like?
When You Shine Your Light, What Does Your Energy Look Like?
Everything is made of energy, as Einstein’s famous equation. E=mc2 tells us.
Albert Einstein
Everything vibrates energy, and all the energies don’t just ignore each other, they dance together at one big party. Each interaction causes something to happen.
Ultimately, it means that energy and matter are the same, and they just vibrate at different rates. Things that vibrate slowly, look solid, and things that vibrate really fast, at or beyond the speed of light are light energy.
When you shine your light and let the true essence of who you are show, what does your energy look like? Is it a beautiful work of art?
Energy waves cancel each other when they are not in harmony, or create new waves, like children. Sometimes, those interactions create something amazing, like super children, called fractals.

Those, fractals, when they meet in a way that they are in the “Golden Ratio” to each other, create magic! The Golden Ratio is sacred geometry that creates beauty and life! Literally.

Sheryl Benjy Shining Her Light
Sheryl Benji shines her light with the creation of her beautiful art. She radiates a beautiful calm energy and her art is colorful and whimsical . This second piece, which I called “The Painter”, was inspired by Sheryl painting this beautiful abstract of flowers. The fractal art reminds me of what it might look like to capture the look of swirling all the paint around that was being used in the flower painting.

For the third piece, Sheryl sent me this photo. The colors and energy in this photo seemed very different from the others she provided.
While looking at her Facebook photos, however, I saw this photo with the red beret, taken by the same photographer. I was very drawn to its energy and my intuition led me to create the piece from this photo instead. I called it “Red Beret”.

This, interestingly, was the piece Sheryl liked best, and had a print made for a desk photo to remind herself of her own personal power.

Why this Design Works
If you have watched some of my previous shows, you know everything is energy. The design highlights the energy of what is important to the clients, which is family, gardening, and spending time together.
The dining area highlights my “Qi” fractal art on the wall. Qi is the life force running through everything. Add good Qi to your space with this art.
Your selection of art determines the energy you want to surround yourself with.
How do you want to feel?
See “The Garden” and “The Fountain” and “Abundance” on the chair fabrics and on the kitchen bar stools. “The Garden” is inspired by flowers. Add their beauty and energy to increase health and well-being. “Abundance” inspired by a field of untamed, beautiful, and free wildflowers and is a reminder to be in alignment with who you truly are.

“Transformation” Aligned Energy Art
Transformation is like Fire.
As the date February 22, 2022 approached, the numbers alone, 2-22-22 predicted a powerful energy day. I started to wonder what the energy would be like at 2:22 pm. I decided to set aside that time to create something and see what would evolve. I had no plan or idea.
Here is what I was inspired to create. Originally, I named it 22222222.
Transformation Fractal Art and Sacred Geometry by Northern Lights Home Staging and Design.
I like to make three pieces that can work together in a group, say behind a sofa. So, I created 2 more pieces. This I called 22222222_2.

And the third one, I called 22222222_2_2. Haha, that is a lot of twos!

The Meaning of Two
Clearly, the number 2 held significance on this day. Upon researching numerology, I learned about its implications.
The number two amplifies intuition, enabling a deep, subconscious understanding. It can sense energies that aren’t visible, only perceptible.
Known as the peacemaker, number two promotes partnerships, balance, and teamwork. It symbolizes grace and diplomacy, harmonizing people, ideas, and elements.
The Meaning Behind the Art
While creating these pieces, I didn’t consciously think about the significance of the number two. I was simply guided by my intuition. The meaning only came to me afterwards.
The initial design reminded me of a fire sweeping through a forest floor, leaving behind charred imprints of what once existed. The flames sometimes seemed potent, at other times subdued.
Having been a wildland firefighter, I’ve witnessed many forest fires. Sometimes fire moves slowly, burning the leaf litter on the surface and sporadically flaring up. When conditions such as low humidity, high temperatures, and wind combine, it escalates and burns trees, creating a dramatic spectacle. Sometimes, fire burns unseen below the surface for months, only to resurface unexpectedly and ignite a surprising blaze.
Transformation is like Fire
Initially, I named these pieces after the number 2. But, when someone observed my art and said, “it looks like transformation in action”, it resonated with me. Over time, I realized these pieces truly symbolized transformation for me, so I renamed them “Transformation”. Why?
Because personal growth into our higher self is akin to a fire.
Sometimes transformation brings about dramatic changes in ourselves, noticeable to us and others—like a wildfire visibly consuming trees. At other times, changes happen slowly and deeply within us, seemingly invisible until one day they become apparent—much like a fire smoldering underground, unnoticed until it emerges to spark a new blaze.
Just as a fire clears the old to make way for the new, transformation lets us release our past and prepare fertile ground for new things to emerge. The more we let go, the more space we create for growth.
Post-fire, even if the land seems barren, new shoots soon sprout, thriving in the room, nutrients, and light that were previously blocked by old trees. These old trees are like our past stories and attachments that keep us from becoming our true selves.
Transformation and the Energy of Two
I’m grateful I had time to create amidst such potent energy. I believe the power of two did indeed heighten my intuition that day, enabling me to tap into energies that were intangible but could be expressed through my art.
The number Two symbolizes grace, balance, and harmony—qualities I perceive in these pieces, akin to how fire brings balance and harmony within an ecosystem.
How can you use Aligned Energy Art in your space?
If the concept of “Transformation” resonates with you, incorporating meaningful and beautiful art into your space can be an impactful way to create your perfect environment. It serves as a daily reminder of what truly matters in your life every time you see it.
Consider adding energy art like this to your living room, meditation space, workout area, or anywhere else your intuition guides you.
And since this artwork is digital, it can be applied to various home decor items such as pillows, bedding, serving trays, coffee mugs, notebooks, and more.
Reflect on your own transformation journey as you enjoy your morning coffee, write in your journal, or practice yoga.
These pieces can serve as powerful, everyday reminders of your ongoing personal evolution.
Aligned Energy Art is another layer of meaning beyond the visual beauty in creating your perfect space that is aligned with who you want to be.

What is Fractal Art?
Fractal art is digital art I create on my computer.I love creating fractal art because it allows me to work with brilliant colors, interesting textures, and incredible detail. Learn more about how it is created in my last Saturday Night Live Art Show, ” A Passion for Purple” where I show some video of the process. See examples at my store on Society 6.
