How the Room Designer Affects the Energy of the Room

I created this Living Room Edesign to showcase the versatility of purple in Global Style designs. This is part of a series exploring how different Global Styles can be achieved using various colors. Global styles like Indian, Turkish, Mexican, Moroccan, Greek, and Bohemian are known for their vibrant hues, eco-friendliness, cultural treasures, and close ties to nature, making them perfect for gatherings.

This particular design represents a modern take on Global Style, offering a sleek, contemporary twist on Bohemian aesthetics. You can delve deeper into the world of global styles by exploring my other blog articles featuring purple, blue, green, red, and black-and-white palettes.

Purple, residing between red and blue on the color wheel, embodies qualities of both neighbors. Like blue, it exudes calm and relaxation, reminiscent of wildflowers found in nature. At the same time, it can ignite passion and energy akin to red. Darker shades often evoke a sense of wisdom.

Purple carries rich symbolism, from status and royalty to spirituality and creativity. Its versatility allows it to resonate with a broad audience, making it a complex and intriguing color.

Brooke says, “This is one of my favorite paintings I ever created. I selected the magenta color as it reminded me of the energy of a friend who celebrated life vividly. I put elements in the piece that fascinated me such as a single woman walking in stride or a taxi”.

When I am creating the painting I am in them and they seem larger than life. They always feel so small comparatively when they are done and on a canvas.

I selected this piece for the room because of the high energy and the color, not knowing the meaning behind it from Brooke’s perspective,

As soon as I put it in this room, I felt it added a sense of vibrant, high energy that you might feel on the streets of a large bustling city where all the people brought the energy of their lives as they walked by.

Yet, the purple walls seemed to contain it with a sense of calmness. As if life can seem chaotic and wild all around us, but if we just step back, it is all small stuff in the big picture of things.

I asked Brooke how she felt about the energy of her painting in this room. She said it evoked a sense of curiosity.

How does it make you feel?

Brooke Harker is a contemporary artist based in Los Angeles, California. Her lively paintings of cities and coastal scenes are characterized by energetic brushstrokes in ink and thick oil paint applied with palette knives. These vibrant depictions of daily life capture a sense of motion and highlight moments of synchronicity. “OoGenesis” by Joan Marie Art

I love the colors in this painting and selected it for the room because the colors worked with purple and it seemed so vibrant and joyful.

In my previous career, I was a wildlife biologist, and it reminded me of a super colorful version of a cell getting ready to divide and create new life. It felt like joyful colorful energy about to explode with possibilities. It just glows with joyous energy on the wall.

When I asked Joan about the story behind the painting, she said it is “the birth of a new world, the uniting of colors, all holding hands in unity.”

“Oogenesis”,  was named by Joan Marie’s husband after she told him the meaning behind the painting.

I asked Joan how she felt about the energy of her painting in this room. She said ” it takes me to a peaceful mystical world of well-being and magical possibilities. Just beautiful!”

“A Passion for Purple” by Mary Ann Benoit

I created a set of three fractal art pieces specifically for this room, which I call “A Passion for Purple”.

Fractal art is digital art I create on my computer.  I love the spiral and curved shapes, fine textures, and vibrant colors.  Creating fractal art is like traveling through a kaleidoscope that has no beginning or end.  When traveling, you find a place you want to stop and stay awhile. The art I create is that place.

I wanted my art to reflect the complexity of purple so that it was calm, yet vibrant, mysterious, spiritual, and elegant at the same time.

I love the way the dark rich purple colors really ground  the room, yet the light purple glows with serene energy. It feels very calming, yet vibrant and mysterious as well, as if it has the secret to some ancient wisdom.

Those who gravitate towards Bohemian aesthetics are free spirits, unburdened by conventions and always guided by their heart!

Are you captivated by vintage furniture, unique light fixtures, and textiles that tell tales of distant lands? Do you find joy in curating treasures from flea markets, thrift shops, and your travels?

You probably have a penchant for blending luxurious fabrics and glimmering accessories with cherished antiques and eclectic pieces. In the Bohemian realm, if it sparks joy, it has a place. After all, abundance is the essence!

The Bohemian style is the epitome of global design, weaving tales of your adventures and experiences into the fabric of your space. It’s a tapestry of vivid colors, intricate patterns, and diverse textures that echo the arts, crafts, and spirit of different cultures.

Bohemian style, often referred to as “boho,” is characterized by its eclectic, free-spirited nature. Rooted in artistic expression and unconventional design, boho draws inspiration from different cultures, eras, and personal narratives. Here are some defining elements of Bohemian style:

1. Layered Textiles: Rich, textured fabrics like velvet, silk, suede, and fur are layered upon each other. Think Moroccan rugs, macramé hangings, and chunky knit throws.

2. Eclectic Patterns and Colors: Boho doesn’t shy away from bold, vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Expect paisleys, tribal prints, florals, and other global-inspired motifs.

3. Natural Materials: Incorporate wooden furnishings, wicker, bamboo, and other organic materials for a grounded feel.

   • Other Global Styles: Typically, other global styles, like Moroccan, Southwestern, or African, are more region-specific and derive elements directly from those regions’ cultures, histories, and landscapes.

   • Bohemian: Emphasizes individuality, freedom, and a disregard for conventions or trends. It’s all about personal expression and creating a space that feels right for the individual, often leading to a mix-and-match approach.

In summary, while both Bohemian and other global styles are inspired by worldwide influences, Bohemian style is more eclectic, free-spirited, and individualistic, whereas other global styles tend to stay truer to their cultural origins.

Previously, I showed you how flat lays create endless possibilities for creating a perfect space and three flat lays inspired by bird feathers.

Birds provide endless inspiration for creating beautiful designs with the intricate patterns,  colors, and textures of their feathers!

Flat Lay #1- The Forest

In my article Birds of a Feather- What Birds Can Teach Us About Designing the Perfect Room, I shared a design for the first flat lay, inspired by realistic photo art of Pintail duck and eagle feathers. I designed a room with a calm and earthy feeling that reminds me of being in the forest using the feather art and colors of nature.

Flat Lay #2- Bohemian Meets Hollywood Glam

The second flat lay, evoked a much more glamorous style and feeling, like a cross between Modern Global Style and Hollywood Glam. I developed several ideas capturing the drama and glamour with different color walls.

Flat Lay #3- A Time for Whimsy- Let’s Fly

The third flat lay to me evoked a sense of whimsy and playfulness, filled with color and the sense that you can take flight and soar to any place you want to go.

As in Flat Lay #2, the feathers are stylized rather than realistic, and more colorful and playful than the gold and black feathers. Even though it has a sense of fun and whimsy, it also feels calm and relaxing with the blues and greens.

I designed two living rooms. One uses wallpaper and is more light and airy yet has texture. The deep blue wall adds more drama with the darker, rich blue.

Introducing “Attachments” Aligned Energy Art

Budda said “the root of suffering is attachment”.

I learned from my teacher Jim Fortin, that the biggest cause of suffering in our lives comes from our attachments, or expectations of the way we think things should be. When we don’t get what we want or how we want it, we are unhappy. Maybe we can release attachment to the idea of how things should be and just allow them to be what they are.

If they are not how we want or expect, maybe that is a good thing that is opening the door for something more wonderful to come into our lives.

This art was inspired by the energy of attachment in our lives and all the chords that bind us to the outcomes we expect and want. 

As you can see, there are chords of attachment between every part of the design, creating one interconnected whole.

Although the greens and blues are colors of nature and often are calming and relaxing colors, these pieces have a sense of high energy because of all the endless linkages.

As I usually do, I created 2 more pieces to go with it, so you can see the movement between pieces and use three together over a sofa t create a focal point in a room.

How can you use Aligned Energy Art in your space?

If the message of “Attachments”, or future concepts I plan to create resonate with you, then adding art that is meaningful as well as beautiful is a great way to create your perfect space and remind yourself of what is important in your life each day when you see it.

Art like “Attachments”  can be added to your living room,  meditation, or workout area or wherever your intuition guides you to put it.

Because this art is digital, it can also be put on a variety of home decor products such as pillows, bedding, serving trays, coffee mugs, notebooks, and more. So you could think about “Attachments”   as you sip your morning coffee out of a “Attachments”  coffee mug while writing things you want to release your “Attachments”  journal, for example, drinking out of your travel cup on the way to work or doing yoga on a “Attachments”  mat.

 Aligned Energy Art  is another layer of meaning beyond the visual beauty in creating your perfect space that is  aligned with who you want to be.

An Example

I created this Edesign, or virtual design as an example of how you could create a space using this art and express the energy of “Attachments”  in your space. Note the “Attachments”  fractal art on the framed canvases on the wall, the serving tray on the coffee table, the pillow on one of the chairs, and the place settings on the table.

Your selection of art determines the energy you want to surround yourself with.

Previously, I showed you how flat lays create endless possibilities for creating a perfect space and three flat lays inspired by bird feathers.

Birds provide endless inspiration for creating beautiful designs with the intricate patterns,  colors, and textures of their feathers!

In my article Birds of a Feather- What Birds Can Teach Us About Designing the Perfect Room, I shared some ideas for one of those flat lays inspired by realistic photo art of Pintail duck and eagle feathers. I designed a room with a calm and earthy feeling that reminds me of being in the forest using the feather art and colors of nature.

This second flat lay, to me, evoked a much more glamorous style and feeling, like a cross between Modern Global Style and Hollywood Glam.

I am not sure what bird the feathers in the photo came from, but the art is less realistic and more stylized.  The black and gold color combination felt very luxurious, and like a great place to add a variety of metallic finishes.

The natural theme of bird feathers still evoked a sense of nature, inviting wood, stone,  and natural materials such as velvet, leather, and cotton.  I selected green, which is a wonderful color of nature, for the fabrics and added plants.

I decided to create a living room, that was dark and moody, with black or deep chocolate walls, and lots of different gold-tone metals. Dramatic lighting enhances the art and brings out the shine of the various brass and gold-toned lights and accessories.

Instead of the photo in the flat lay, I found several other art prints of feathers in black and gold that I used as inspiration.

I could see this combination in a living room, master bedroom, master bathroom, or powder room. How about you?

I decided to try a living room. A flat lay can first evolve into a drawing or floor plan to get a feel for how the room will work spatially.

To get the feeling of drama and glamour, I decided to try the idea of a black wall. I love it! It beautifully highlights the feather art and sets off the beautiful greens in the furniture. Of course, lighting, strategically placed and lots of it, is important when using black.

For variety, I tried a textured light-colored wallpaper similar in color to the feathers to give the room a more light and airy feeling. I think I like the black better for a glamorous feeling.

And here is it in a shade of off-white. While still pretty, I like the black walls best, and the feeling of dimension the textured wallpaper gives over the white walls. How about you?

The moral of this flat lay tale is that you can use natural elements like bird feathers to inspire glamorous, dramatic, modern, and sleek designs while still bringing the outdoors in. And, don’t be scared to use black!

Though global design champions eclecticism, you might find yourself particularly captivated by the hues and artifacts of specific regions, letting them take center stage in your space.

Elements of Bohemian Style

Bohemian style, often referred to as “boho,” is characterized by its eclectic, free-spirited nature. Rooted in artistic expression and unconventional design, boho draws inspiration from different cultures, eras, and personal narratives. Here are some defining elements of Bohemian style:

1. Layered Textiles: Rich, textured fabrics like velvet, silk, suede, and fur are layered upon each other. Think Moroccan rugs, macramé hangings, and chunky knit throws.

2. Eclectic Patterns and Colors: Boho doesn’t shy away from bold, vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Expect paisleys, tribal prints, florals, and other global-inspired motifs.

3. Natural Materials: Incorporate wooden furnishings, wicker, bamboo, and other organic materials for a grounded feel.

4. Plenty of Greenery: Plants, whether potted or hanging, play a crucial role in boho spaces. They introduce a fresh, earthy vibe and often become central features.

5. Vintage and Handmade Items: From flea markets to artisanal craft fairs, boho decor often includes vintage, handmade, or one-of-a-kind pieces, lending the space unique character and charm.

6. Worldly Decor: Artifacts and textiles from travels or different cultures, like Indian tapestries, African baskets, or Tibetan thangkas, give the space a global ambiance.

7. Low-level Seating: Think floor cushions, poufs, low sofas, and tatami mats, promoting a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

8. Unconventional Display: Art and items aren’t just hung on walls. They might be layered, draped, or even placed on the floor. The aim is to create an aesthetically pleasing sense of ‘organized chaos’.

9. A Mix of Styles: Boho often blends elements from various design philosophies—be it mid-century modern, industrial, or even a touch of glamour—into one cohesive look.

10. Personal Touches: Bohemian style is deeply personal. It’s not unusual to find family photos, cherished trinkets, or DIY items that hold sentimental value.

The essence of boho is not strictly adhering to a set formula but embracing the unexpected, celebrating individuality, and letting one’s personality shine through the decor. It’s about creating a space that feels like a true reflection of the self and one’s journey.

Colors of Bohemian Style

Bohemian style is known for its rich and vibrant use of color, drawing inspiration from various cultures and natural elements. While there’s no strict palette that defines boho style, here are some colors commonly associated with it:

1. Earth Tones: Deep browns, greens, and grays often serve as base colors, grounding the space and providing a canvas for brighter tones.

2. Jewel Tones: Saturated purples, fiery oranges, electric blues, and deep magentas are classic boho choices. These rich hues evoke a sense of worldliness and artistic flair.

3. Warm Reds and Pinks: Think of Moroccan or Indian textiles, which often feature warm terracottas, corals, and pinks.

4. Golden Yellows: From mustard to saffron, yellow shades bring warmth and brightness to bohemian spaces.

5. Turquoise and Teal: These colors, reminiscent of gemstones and oceans, add depth and drama.

6. Neutrals: Though boho is known for its color, neutral shades like beiges, creams, and off-whites play a crucial role in balancing out the vibrancy and providing moments of calm.

7. Metallic Accents: While not a color per se, gold, bronze, and other metallics often find their way into boho designs, whether through accessories, trims, or decorative pieces.

8. Natural Greens: Taking inspiration from nature and the emphasis on plants in boho design, various shades of green, from olive to emerald, are often incorporated.

IBohemian style is highly individualistic. While the above colors are commonly associated with boho, it’s more about mixing and matching what resonates personally with your own energy. 

This style is flexible, allowing for personal tastes and influences from different cultures to shine through. So, while these are guiding tones, there’s plenty of room for interpretation and personalization in boho color schemes.

The Energy of Bohemian Style

The energy of Bohemian style is a unique amalgamation of various attributes, emanating a vibe that is both relaxed and vibrant. Here’s a breakdown of the energy associated with Bohemian style:

1. Free-Spirited: At its core, the Bohemian style embodies a sense of freedom and non-conformity. It’s about breaking the mold, rejecting traditional norms, and embracing an eclectic mix that reflects one’s unique personality and experiences.

2. Creative Expression: Bohemian spaces are often filled with handmade items, crafts, and artifacts from around the world. These pieces tell stories, each item a reflection of artistic expression and individual creativity.

3. Warmth and Comfort: With its use of layered textiles, plush cushions, and rugs, Bohemian style exudes warmth and coziness. It’s inviting, making one feel immediately at ease.

4. Connection to Nature: Boho interiors often incorporate natural elements like plants, stones, and wooden items, reflecting a deep-rooted connection to the earth and nature.

5. Worldly and Cultured: The style showcases an appreciation for different cultures, traditions, and crafts from around the world. The energy is one of inclusivity and global appreciation.

6. Sensual and Tactile: With an emphasis on textures and materials, Bohemian style engages the senses. Whether it’s the feel of a soft fabric, the visual appeal of colorful patterns, or the aromatic presence of incense, the style appeals to our sensory experiences.

7. Whimsical and Playful: The eclectic mix often results in unexpected and playful combinations, lending a whimsical energy to Bohemian spaces.

8. Intimate and Personal: Above all, Bohemian style is deeply personal. It reflects the inhabitant’s journey, tastes, memories, and aspirations. It’s intimate, revealing stories and experiences through design elements.

In essence, the energy of Bohemian style is vibrant yet relaxed, worldly yet intimate, and always deeply personal and expressive. It’s a style that resonates with those who value individuality, creativity, and a connection to the world around them.

How to Get the Look

Want to get the look? Whether you’re diving deep into Boho style or just sprinkling some elements into your current decor, here are some tips.

1. Jewel Tones: Add splashes of deep, vibrant colors through cushions, lamps, or artwork.
2. Global Mix: Incorporate items from various countries, blending textures and patterns to evoke a sense of worldly charm.
3. Velvety Touch: Introduce soft fabrics like velvet for an instant luxe feel.
4. Metallic Hints: Blend in metals to provide that eclectic spark.
5. Vintage Meets Modern: Pair your contemporary pieces with vintage finds for an authentic Boho mix.
6. Treasures on Display: Showcase your personal journey – souvenirs, photos, and unique finds that narrate your story.
7. Curate Thoughtfully: While Boho celebrates abundance, give each piece its moment. Create breathing space around standout items for a refined look, which I personally like and think of as elegant Bohemian.

Bohemian is all about expressing your authentic self. Let your space tell your unique story, mixing the old with the new, the near with the far, and the bold with the subtle.

Bohemian Style Edesign

Below is an example of an Edesign I created for a Bohemian style living room.

In this Edesign I created, I’ve fused blue and green jewel tones seen in wool rugs, furnishings, and accents. Tribal lamps complement the soft fabric textures of the sofa and chair, while metallic hints in the side chair and accessories add depth. I’ve blended materials like velvet, cotton, leather, rattan, textured pottery, and wool to enhance dimension.

Modern side chairs are juxtaposed against a rustic, ethnic-themed coffee table. My contemporary computer fractal art contrasts beautifully with faux horn mirrors. The vintage vibe of the rug contrasts with the sleek sofa and velvet chair, striking a balance.

The art on the wall is my own fractal energy art, my “Bioluminesence” series.

Overall, this curated design leans towards minimalism, with each piece thoughtfully chosen to give it a more elegant look.

IMy fractal art is based on that beautiful glowing effect of bioluminescence in the ocean. The blues and greens as well as the concept help bring the outside in and work with the Bohemian jewel tone colors.

Bohemian Style Color Schemes

As mentioned earlier, Bohemian style celebrates warm earthy colors, metals and jewel tones.

Bohemian decor often uses deep browns, greens, grays or other neutral colors for base colors, then accessorizes with saturated colors. 

Here are some examples of the same Edesign using some earthy neutral creams, beige, and brown (Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze) on the walls. Grays did not work well with the design.

How is Bohemian Style Different?

Bohemian style, while rooted in global influences, has distinct characteristics that set it apart from other global styles. Here’s a breakdown to highlight the differences:

1. Origin & Influence:

   • Bohemian: The name derives from the French word for ‘gypsy’, and originally referred to the nomadic, spirited lifestyle of the Bohemians. It’s less about a specific culture and more about a free-spirited and eclectic mix of elements.
   • Other Global Styles: Typically, other global styles, like Moroccan, Southwestern, or African, are more region-specific and derive elements directly from those regions’ cultures, histories, and landscapes.

2. Design Philosophy:

   • Bohemian: Emphasizes individuality, freedom, and a disregard for conventions or trends. It’s all about personal expression and creating a space that feels right for the individual, often leading to a mix-and-match approach.
   • Other Global Styles: These often adhere to traditional designs, colors, and patterns from the specific region they originate from.

3. Elements & Decor:

   • Bohemian: Known for its layering. There’s often a mix of vintage with modern, handmade with store-bought, and a blend of different textures and materials. It’s common to see plants, mismatched textiles, and a cluttered yet harmonious look.
   • Other Global Styles: While they might also incorporate mixed textiles and handmade items, they’re typically more cohesive in terms of the cultural motifs, colors, and materials they employ.

4. Colors:

   • Bohemian: Typically vibrant and varied, with a rich mix of jewel tones, earthy colors, and metallics.
   • Other Global Styles: While they can also be vibrant, they often have a more defined and consistent palette, like the rich blues and whites in Greek Mediterranean style or the earthy tones of Southwestern style.

5. Versatility:

   • Bohemian: Highly versatile and adaptive. Since it’s driven by individual choice, it can easily incorporate elements from various global styles.
   • Other Global Styles: While adaptable, they are often more defined and distinct, making them less fluid than Bohemian style.

In summary, while both Bohemian and other global styles are inspired by worldwide influences, Bohemian style is more eclectic, free-spirited, and individualistic, whereas other global styles tend to stay truer to their cultural origins.

“Gratitude” Aligned Energy Art

Gratitude is the Attitude that attracts abundance into your life.

I like to make three pieces that can work together in a group, say behind a sofa. So, I created 3 pieces in the “Gratitude” series.

Fractal art is a type of digital art created with mathematical algorithms. I use specialized software to generate intricate patterns with vibrant colors and detail. By zooming and panning, I can explore infinite variations within the fractal. Once satisfied, I render the final image.

Fractal art combines science and art to produce mesmerizing and visually stunning designs.

Fractal art is digital art I create on my computer. I love creating fractal art because it allows me to work with brilliant colors, interesting textures, and incredible detail.
