Bring the Outdoors in with Interior Design

As humans, we want to be connected with nature and other living things such as people, animals, and plants because it makes us feel good. This longing for “connection” is called “biophilia”.

There are numerous ways that we could use Interior Design to get that connection for a happier, healthier home including using natural materials, plants, animals, color, art, scents, and lighting.

Some tips include”

  • Bringing the outdoors “in” through the use of design, strategic window placement, and use of colors that harmonize with the outdoor environment. Use your outdoor windows as indoor “art”.
  • Using the colors of nature in your home such as blues, greens, browns, off whites and grays since they are prominent in trees, shrubs, the sky and water.
  • Using color from your outdoor landscaping visible from your windows in your color scheme.
  • Using art that shows landscapes, plants, animals, or other natural elements.
  • Designing to make it easy to live with pets such as pet-friendly upholstery, washable rugs, etc.
  • Creating exterior landscapes that are visible through your windows and are beautiful, colorful, smell great, and attract wildlife.

This Edesign for a global style living and dining room is a nice example of how to apply some of these ideas.

In this design, the windows and beautiful views of the forest provide the perfect indoor “art” and create a focal point and color scheme for the design.

  • The color palette from this “art” or view includes greens, yellows, browns and blue from the sky which are incorporated in the furniture, pillows and wall color. Various shades of green are used to highlight the various shades outside. The area rug creates the illusion of flowing water.
  • The art shows a natural mountain landscape showing yellow birch trees similar to what is in the outdoor landscape.
  • The furnishings use pet friendly materials, and as you can see, makes it comfy cozy for pets such as the kitty on the chair.
  • The décor includes plants and flowers.
  • The furnishings and flooring are wood and include different wood types and colors for variety.
  • The window treatments allow in natural light and are simple in color and pattern to keep the focus on the outdoor view.
  • The lamps use the shape and pattern of a natural element (pineapple).

In the adjacent dining room, the forest theme continues.

In this room, the browns of the forest are highlighted in the wood of the chairs and table the area rug with various shades of brown on the wood floor and the art. The fractal art which I designed is part of my “Old Growth” series I developed because it reminds me of the colors and patterns of an old growth forest. Each frame is in a different wood tone.

The greens in the chair cushions add a pop of color and harmonize with the outdoor view and the living room colors. The décor includes plants.

The wall color here and window treatments are neutral to keep the focus on the outdoor views and the art.

Overall, this design is simple, affordable to create using color, natural elements such as wood and plants and art that highlights nature. The overall feeling is one of serenity with a focus on the amazing forest views. The look of this room will change as the seasons change and the yellow from the fall foliage changes to green, but it will still look great.

I Learned to Solve All My Interior Design Problems by Dancing-Light Transforms Ordinary to Extraordinary

Light isn’t merely an illuminating force—it’s a storyteller, a guide, and an artist. In the intricate dance between shadow and glow, there lies the potential to transform any space into an evocative sanctuary of feelings and experiences.

As in my philosophy of Aligned Design, the combination of artistry, science, and energectic connection captivates the power of light.and its ability to spotligh the unique facets of your environment and create an atmosphere of enchantment.

Light Makes the Magic Happen.

I have a love for many forms of art, including one of my favorites, dance. I am always noticing the similarities between what is important in the different art forms I explore.

I had the privilege of attending a dance workshop titled “From Practice to Professional Presentation,” led by the renowned dancer and instructor, Helia Bandeh. This immersive experience delved deep into the nuances of creating a visually captivating stage or backdrop for dance performances, whether live or on video. Helia shed light on crucial aspects such as décor, lighting, and costuming.

It’s astonishing how much it intersects with the principles of Interior Design! In this article, we’ll zoom in on the magic of lighting.

According to Helia, “light is the most important element in your visual presentation and can totally transform the performance or the space”. I agree, whether it is dance or Interior Design.

Light Shapes Perception

The power of light extends beyond mere illumination. It serves as a director, guiding one’s gaze. Whether illuminating an entire auditorium – encompassing both audience and stage – or narrowing down to a singular performer, light dictates where our attention lies.

In our homes and workplaces, strategic lighting can accentuate a piece of art, create a cozy reading nook, illuminate a kitchen countertop, or guide a path. The right play of light can alter our perception of space, both in terms of size and ambiance.

For instance, during a performance, when a specific area is spotlighted, it not only commands focus but can also transform the vastness of a stage or room into a cozy, intimate setting, allowing external distractions to fade into obscurity.

Light is the Master of Color

In the realm of the stage, light serves as a masterful tool for manipulating color, all without altering the physical aspects of the set. Consider, for instance, the transformative effect of various lights on a dancer adorned in a white dress. Colored lighting has the capacity to envelop the backdrop, intensify the hues enveloping the performer, or instill a distinct mood.

Within your interior spaces, the presence of colored light can profoundly impact the perceived warmth or coolness of the surroundings, thereby orchestrating the very essence of your colors. Here, light reigns supreme as it can effortlessly usher in a festive ambiance, as exemplified by the twinkling charm of Christmas lights.

Light is the Maestro of Drama

Sharp, hard light, characterized by its pronounced contrast between luminosity and shadow, isn’t just a source of illumination; it’s a storytelling tool. By carving out a space with stark differences between light and dark, hard light can evoke intense emotions, channel focus, and create a cinematic atmosphere.

Imagine a room bathed in soft, uniform light. Now, introduce a singular beam of hard light, spotlighting a piece of art on the wall or a vintage table in the center. Instantly, that object becomes the room’s protagonist, drawing eyes and sparking intrigue. This interplay isn’t merely about visibility, but about imbuing significance.

Similarly, in the realm of theater and dance, hard lighting can elevate a scene or movement, turning a simple gesture into a moment of raw, emotional power. The way it carves shadows and highlights can echo the intricacies of the human condition – our vulnerabilities, our strengths, our moments of introspection.

In essence, light doesn’t just illuminate; it punctuates, intensifies, and narrates, shaping our experience of any given space or moment.

Light- The Ultimate Designer’s Tool

In the realm of design, light isn’t just an element; it’s the alchemy that metamorphoses a space. “Light stands as the cornerstone of design, wielding the power to wholly redefine an environment.”

As I journey through life, my appreciation deepens for the interwoven tapestry of artistic disciplines. The parallels between Interior Design and other artistic endeavors are striking. At their core, they share foundational principles that breathe life into masterpieces. It requires a keen sense of observation, a discerning ear, and a heart that resonates with the ambient energy to truly discern these connections.

The artistry (innate creativity), melded with the precision of science (understanding of colors), and the profoundness of energy (the emotive connection), orchestrates a harmonious ballet of elements. This trinity of alignment is my guiding compass, allowing me to choreograph exquisite dance performances and craft evocative interior spaces.

Light- The Unspoken Director

Within the canvas of your interior, light is the artist’s brush, poised to highlight key facets of your environment. It possesses the remarkable ability to draw the viewer’s focus with pinpoint precision – whether it’s accentuating a cherished piece of art, carving out a serene reading alcove, illuminating a workspace in your kitchen or office, or gently guiding you along a well-defined pathway.

Moreover, the art of spotlighting and dimming is akin to wielding a magician’s wand. It bestows the power to sculpt how we perceive space, deftly crafting an atmosphere of intimacy and charm. Envision yourself nestled before a flickering fireplace, with the remainder of the room bathed in a soft, subdued glow. Or picture a cozy reading nook or a captivating game corner, bathed in the gentle embrace of selectively dimmed lighting, beckoning you to unwind and lose yourself in the moment. These are the artful manipulations of light that transform mere spaces into immersive experiences.

Light- The Master of Energy

Light directs your attention to what you want to highlight such as the art sculpture on the table, and the elements of the celebration on the other tables. Edesign by Mary Ann Benoit.

The energy of lighting profoundly influences the energy, or ambiance, of a space through how it affects  our senses, emotions, and perceptions:

  1. Emotional Resonance: Different lighting can evoke different feelings. Warm, soft lighting often feels cozy and inviting, evoking feelings of relaxation and warmth. In contrast, cool, bright lighting can energize and invigorate a space, making it feel active and alert.

  2. Focus and Perception: Lighting can be used to draw attention to specific elements of a room, guiding one’s gaze and perceptions. By spotlighting a particular object or area, it becomes a focal point, altering how the space is experienced. Conversely, shadows can be used to create depth and mystery, lending a room an air of intimacy or contemplation.

  3. Spatial Dynamics: The way light spreads throughout a space can make it feel larger or smaller. Bright, evenly distributed light gives the sensation of openness, making a space feel larger. Dim lighting or selectively illuminated areas can make a space feel cozy, intimate, and more segmented.

  4. Temporal Ambiance: The changing nature of lighting, especially natural light, sets the rhythm of our day. Morning light can feel fresh and invigorating, while evening light is often warm and settling. By mimicking these natural transitions, artificial lighting can set the mood or change the energy of a room to align with our circadian rhythms.

  5. Color Interaction: Light affects the way we perceive colors. The hue and intensity of light can enhance or mute the colors in a room, thereby changing its overall energy. A room bathed in golden hour light will feel vastly different from the same room illuminated by the bluish light of a cloudy day.

  6. Cultural and Personal Associations: Different cultures, and even individuals, might have varying associations with light based on experiences and upbringing. For example, candlelight might evoke feelings of romance, spirituality, or introspection depending on one’s personal experiences.

  7. Energetic Flow: In metaphysical terms, light is often associated with positive energy flow. A well-lit space is considered to have good ‘Chi’, encouraging vitality, clarity, and well-being.

In essence, the energy of lighting is intrinsically linked with the energy of a space. It’s more than just visibility; the beauty it creates or its effects on color,  it’s about creating an ambiance, invoking emotions, and influencing the very essence of a space’s character.

Get the Look- Global Style- Bohemian

The Bohemian style is a radiant dance of earthy hues, metals, and vibrant jewel tones. It’s grounded in neutrals like deep browns and serene grays, then sprinkled with vivacious purples, burning oranges, and brilliant blues.

Those who gravitate towards Bohemian aesthetics are free spirits, unburdened by conventions and always guided by their heart!

Are you captivated by vintage furniture, unique light fixtures, and textiles that tell tales of distant lands? Do you find joy in curating treasures from flea markets, thrift shops, and your travels?

You probably have a penchant for blending luxurious fabrics and glimmering accessories with cherished antiques and eclectic pieces. In the Bohemian realm, if it sparks joy, it has a place. After all, abundance is the essence!

Get the Look- Global Style-Bohemian

The Bohemian style is the epitome of global design, weaving tales of your adventures and experiences into the fabric of your space. It’s a tapestry of vivid colors, intricate patterns, and diverse textures that echo the arts, crafts, and spirit of different cultures.

Every item narrates a unique story, sparking conversations and memories.

There’s a free-spirited fluidity in how treasures are showcased, unbound by geographical or thematic constraints. Antiques seamlessly blend with contemporary pieces, while elements from nature—like animal horns, verdant plants, or raw minerals—infuse authenticity and charisma.

Though global design champions eclecticism, you might find yourself particularly captivated by the hues and artifacts of specific regions, letting them take center stage in your space.

Elements of Bohemian Style

Bohemian style, often referred to as “boho,” is characterized by its eclectic, free-spirited nature. Rooted in artistic expression and unconventional design, boho draws inspiration from different cultures, eras, and personal narratives. Here are some defining elements of Bohemian style:

  1. Layered Textiles: Rich, textured fabrics like velvet, silk, suede, and fur are layered upon each other. Think Moroccan rugs, macramé hangings, and chunky knit throws.

  2. Eclectic Patterns and Colors: Boho doesn’t shy away from bold, vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Expect paisleys, tribal prints, florals, and other global-inspired motifs.

  3. Natural Materials: Incorporate wooden furnishings, wicker, bamboo, and other organic materials for a grounded feel.

  4. Plenty of Greenery: Plants, whether potted or hanging, play a crucial role in boho spaces. They introduce a fresh, earthy vibe and often become central features.

  5. Vintage and Handmade Items: From flea markets to artisanal craft fairs, boho decor often includes vintage, handmade, or one-of-a-kind pieces, lending the space unique character and charm.

  6. Worldly Decor: Artifacts and textiles from travels or different cultures, like Indian tapestries, African baskets, or Tibetan thangkas, give the space a global ambiance.

  7. Low-level Seating: Think floor cushions, poufs, low sofas, and tatami mats, promoting a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

  8. Unconventional Display: Art and items aren’t just hung on walls. They might be layered, draped, or even placed on the floor. The aim is to create an aesthetically pleasing sense of ‘organized chaos’.

  9. A Mix of Styles: Boho often blends elements from various design philosophies—be it mid-century modern, industrial, or even a touch of glamour—into one cohesive look.

  10. Personal Touches: Bohemian style is deeply personal. It’s not unusual to find family photos, cherished trinkets, or DIY items that hold sentimental value.

The essence of boho is not strictly adhering to a set formula but embracing the unexpected, celebrating individuality, and letting one’s personality shine through the decor. It’s about creating a space that feels like a true reflection of the self and one’s journey.

Colors of Bohemian Style

Bohemian style is known for its rich and vibrant use of color, drawing inspiration from various cultures and natural elements. While there’s no strict palette that defines boho style, here are some colors commonly associated with it:

  1. Earth Tones: Deep browns, greens, and grays often serve as base colors, grounding the space and providing a canvas for brighter tones.

  2. Jewel Tones: Saturated purples, fiery oranges, electric blues, and deep magentas are classic boho choices. These rich hues evoke a sense of worldliness and artistic flair.

  3. Warm Reds and Pinks: Think of Moroccan or Indian textiles, which often feature warm terracottas, corals, and pinks.

  4. Golden Yellows: From mustard to saffron, yellow shades bring warmth and brightness to bohemian spaces.

  5. Turquoise and Teal: These colors, reminiscent of gemstones and oceans, add depth and drama.

  6. Neutrals: Though boho is known for its color, neutral shades like beiges, creams, and off-whites play a crucial role in balancing out the vibrancy and providing moments of calm.

  7. Metallic Accents: While not a color per se, gold, bronze, and other metallics often find their way into boho designs, whether through accessories, trims, or decorative pieces.

  8. Natural Greens: Taking inspiration from nature and the emphasis on plants in boho design, various shades of green, from olive to emerald, are often incorporated.

IBohemian style is highly individualistic. While the above colors are commonly associated with boho, it’s more about mixing and matching what resonates personally with your own energy.

This style is flexible, allowing for personal tastes and influences from different cultures to shine through. So, while these are guiding tones, there’s plenty of room for interpretation and personalization in boho color schemes.

The Energy of Bohemian Style

The energy of Bohemian style is a unique amalgamation of various attributes, emanating a vibe that is both relaxed and vibrant. Here’s a breakdown of the energy associated with Bohemian style:

  1. Free-Spirited: At its core, the Bohemian style embodies a sense of freedom and non-conformity. It’s about breaking the mold, rejecting traditional norms, and embracing an eclectic mix that reflects one’s unique personality and experiences.

  2. Creative Expression: Bohemian spaces are often filled with handmade items, crafts, and artifacts from around the world. These pieces tell stories, each item a reflection of artistic expression and individual creativity.

  3. Warmth and Comfort: With its use of layered textiles, plush cushions, and rugs, Bohemian style exudes warmth and coziness. It’s inviting, making one feel immediately at ease.

  4. Connection to Nature: Boho interiors often incorporate natural elements like plants, stones, and wooden items, reflecting a deep-rooted connection to the earth and nature.

  5. Worldly and Cultured: The style showcases an appreciation for different cultures, traditions, and crafts from around the world. The energy is one of inclusivity and global appreciation.

  6. Sensual and Tactile: With an emphasis on textures and materials, Bohemian style engages the senses. Whether it’s the feel of a soft fabric, the visual appeal of colorful patterns, or the aromatic presence of incense, the style appeals to our sensory experiences.

  7. Whimsical and Playful: The eclectic mix often results in unexpected and playful combinations, lending a whimsical energy to Bohemian spaces.

  8. Intimate and Personal: Above all, Bohemian style is deeply personal. It reflects the inhabitant’s journey, tastes, memories, and aspirations. It’s intimate, revealing stories and experiences through design elements.

In essence, the energy of Bohemian style is vibrant yet relaxed, worldly yet intimate, and always deeply personal and expressive. It’s a style that resonates with those who value individuality, creativity, and a connection to the world around them.

How to Get the Look

Want to get the look? Whether you’re diving deep into Boho style or just sprinkling some elements into your current decor, here are some tips.

  1. Jewel Tones: Add splashes of deep, vibrant colors through cushions, lamps, or artwork.
  2. Global Mix: Incorporate items from various countries, blending textures and patterns to evoke a sense of worldly charm.
  3. Velvety Touch: Introduce soft fabrics like velvet for an instant luxe feel.
  4. Metallic Hints: Blend in metals to provide that eclectic spark.
  5. Vintage Meets Modern: Pair your contemporary pieces with vintage finds for an authentic Boho mix.
  6. Treasures on Display: Showcase your personal journey – souvenirs, photos, and unique finds that narrate your story.
  7. Curate Thoughtfully: While Boho celebrates abundance, give each piece its moment. Create breathing space around standout items for a refined look, which I personally like and think of as elegant Bohemian.

Bohemian is all about expressing your authentic self. Let your space tell your unique story, mixing the old with the new, the near with the far, and the bold with the subtle.

Bohemian Style Edesign

Below is an example of an Edesign I created for a Bohemian style living room.

In this Edesign I created, I’ve fused blue and green jewel tones seen in wool rugs, furnishings, and accents. Tribal lamps complement the soft fabric textures of the sofa and chair, while metallic hints in the side chair and accessories add depth. I’ve blended materials like velvet, cotton, leather, rattan, textured pottery, and wool to enhance dimension.

Modern side chairs are juxtaposed against a rustic, ethnic-themed coffee table. My contemporary computer fractal art contrasts beautifully with faux horn mirrors. The vintage vibe of the rug contrasts with the sleek sofa and velvet chair, striking a balance.

The art on the wall is my own fractal energy art, my “Bioluminesence” series.

Overall, this curated design leans towards minimalism, with each piece thoughtfully chosen to give it a more elegant look.

Bohemian Style Color Schemes

As mentioned earlier, Bohemian style celebrates warm earthy colors, metals and jewel tones.

Bohemian decor often uses deep browns, greens, grays or other neutral colors for base colors, then accessorizes with saturated colors.

Here are some examples of the same Edesign using some earthy neutral creams, beige, and brown (Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze) on the walls. Grays did not work well with the design.

How is Bohemian Style Different?

Bohemian style, while rooted in global influences, has distinct characteristics that set it apart from other global styles. Here’s a breakdown to highlight the differences:

  1. Origin & Influence:

    • Bohemian: The name derives from the French word for ‘gypsy’, and originally referred to the nomadic, spirited lifestyle of the Bohemians. It’s less about a specific culture and more about a free-spirited and eclectic mix of elements.
    • Other Global Styles: Typically, other global styles, like Moroccan, Southwestern, or African, are more region-specific and derive elements directly from those regions’ cultures, histories, and landscapes.
  2. Design Philosophy:

    • Bohemian: Emphasizes individuality, freedom, and a disregard for conventions or trends. It’s all about personal expression and creating a space that feels right for the individual, often leading to a mix-and-match approach.
    • Other Global Styles: These often adhere to traditional designs, colors, and patterns from the specific region they originate from.
  3. Elements & Decor:

    • Bohemian: Known for its layering. There’s often a mix of vintage with modern, handmade with store-bought, and a blend of different textures and materials. It’s common to see plants, mismatched textiles, and a cluttered yet harmonious look.
    • Other Global Styles: While they might also incorporate mixed textiles and handmade items, they’re typically more cohesive in terms of the cultural motifs, colors, and materials they employ.
  4. Colors:

    • Bohemian: Typically vibrant and varied, with a rich mix of jewel tones, earthy colors, and metallics.
    • Other Global Styles: While they can also be vibrant, they often have a more defined and consistent palette, like the rich blues and whites in Greek Mediterranean style or the earthy tones of Southwestern style.
  5. Versatility:

    • Bohemian: Highly versatile and adaptive. Since it’s driven by individual choice, it can easily incorporate elements from various global styles.
    • Other Global Styles: While adaptable, they are often more defined and distinct, making them less fluid than Bohemian style.

In summary, while both Bohemian and other global styles are inspired by worldwide influences, Bohemian style is more eclectic, free-spirited, and individualistic, whereas other global styles tend to stay truer to their cultural origins.

The Art of Indian Style Design

Indian design captures the heart with its warmth, vivacity, and intricate detailing. The essence of this style is a harmonious blend of relaxed elegance and vibrant energy.

Indian style interior design is renowned for its rich diversity, deep-rooted history, and vibrant colors. It reflects the country’s multifaceted culture and has evolved over millennia. Here are some key design elements that characterize Indian interior design:

  1. Rich Color Palette: As discussed, Indian interiors often showcase a warm and vibrant palette, with deep reds, saffron oranges, royal blues, bright yellows, and earthy browns.

  2. Ornate Furniture: Traditional Indian furniture is handcrafted, often made from solid wood like teak or rosewood. These pieces are typically heavy, featuring intricate carvings, inlay work, and brass or iron embellishments.

  3. Textiles and Fabrics: India is famous for its textiles. Rich silks, cottons, wool, and jute adorn Indian interiors in the form of drapes, upholstery, throw pillows, and rugs. Patterns range from paisleys, mandalas, and florals to intricate geometric designs.

  4. Handmade Crafts: Indian homes often feature traditional crafts like pottery, brass and copperware, hand-woven baskets, and hand-blown glass items.

  5. Traditional Patterns: Motifs like elephants, peacocks, and lotuses – symbols considered auspicious and regal – often feature prominently in various elements, from textiles to wall art.

  6. Architectural Details: Features such as carved wooden pillars, intricate jaali (lattice) work, and arches (especially the multi-foiled arch) can often be seen in traditional Indian homes.

  7. Flooring: While marble and stone are preferred in grander settings, many homes use handmade tiles or even clay tiles. Warm, wooden flooring is also commonly seen.

  8. Spiritual Elements: India, with its deep spiritual roots, often features religious or spiritual symbols in its decor. This can be in the form of idols, paintings, wall hangings depicting deities, or even a dedicated prayer room with an altar.

  9. Lighting: Traditional Indian lamps and lanterns, often made from metals like brass, create ambient lighting. Diyas, small oil lamps, are also popular, especially during festivals.

  10. Rugs and Carpets: Handwoven Indian rugs, like the famous Persian-influenced Kashmiri carpets or the tribal dhurries, add warmth and luxury to Indian interiors.

  11. Swing Seats: An interesting feature in some Indian homes, especially in the southern part, is the wooden swing seat, or ‘oonjal’. Suspended from the ceiling, it adds a playful and relaxed element to the decor.

  12. Greenery: Indian homes often incorporate indoor plants and open courtyards with plants, reflecting the country’s tropical nature.

  13. Use of Mirrors: Especially popular in states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, mirrors are often stitched into textiles or embedded in wall art, adding a shimmering quality to interiors.

The charm of Indian interior design lies in its ability to harmonize these diverse elements into a cohesive whole, creating spaces that exude warmth, luxury, and the timeless essence of India.

The Colors of Indian Style

The colors of India are deeply embedded in its rich cultural, spiritual, and geographical tapestry. Here’s a breakdown of the colors that symbolize India, their significance, and where they prominently feature:

  1. Saffron (Kesari): A vibrant shade of orange, saffron represents courage and sacrifice. It’s one of the three colors in the Indian national flag, and also significant in Hindu religious rituals.

  2. Green: Representing life and happiness, it’s another color in the Indian flag, reflecting the nation’s agricultural dominance and its green landscapes. Green is also significant in Islamic culture.

  3. White: Symbolizing peace and purity, white is the central band of the Indian flag. It’s also the color worn during Hindu mourning periods.

  4. Blue: This color holds special importance primarily because of the navy blue Ashoka Chakra in the center of the Indian flag. Additionally, blue is often associated with Lord Krishna, a major deity in Hinduism.

  5. Red: Signifying purity, fertility, love, and beauty, red is a dominant color in Indian weddings, where brides traditionally wear red saris. It’s also the color of many important festivals and rituals.

  6. Gold (Yellow): Representing wealth, prosperity, and knowledge. It’s prominent in Indian jewelry, textiles, and religious ceremonies. Yellow also plays a crucial role during festivals like Basant Panchami and Diwali.

  7. Turquoise and Indigo: Rooted in India’s history of indigo farming, these colors are prominent in traditional Indian textiles and craft.

  8. Pink: Often associated with celebrations and life in India. The city of Jaipur is nicknamed the ‘Pink City’ because of its distinctly colored buildings.

  9. Earthy Tones: Given the diverse landscapes of India, from the Thar Desert to the Himalayan terrains, shades of brown, beige, and other earthy tones are an integral part of the Indian color palette.

  10. Black: Although it’s less predominant than other colors and often considered inauspicious in certain cultural contexts, black is used in some regional garments and arts.

India’s festivals, rituals, seasons, and even daily life are a riot of colors, each holding symbolic significance. From the Holi festival, where a multitude of colors are thrown in celebration, to the varied landscapes that change hue with seasons, India is truly a country defined by a rich and diverse palette.

Motifs of India

Some of the motifs you might find in Indian culture and design include Paisley, mandala, elephant motifs, lotus designs, peacock patterns, Mughal florals, intricate jaali work, Warli art, Kalamkari patterns, Tanjore art details, Rangoli designs, tribal Gond patterns, Rajasthani block prints, mirror work (shisha embroidery), mehendi (henna) patterns, chakra symbols, traditional temple motifs, Boteh design, Kundan artwork.

I have created a series of energy art designs for each chakra. They could work perfectly with Indian style.

Below is an example of an Edesign I created for an Indian style living room using the Indian flag for color inspiration. Often a nations flag depicts colors that you see used throughout many aspects of the culture and designs.

Putting it All Together- Indian Style Edesign

For style elements, I used floral and animal designs and a hand crafted Indian rug, and Indian Rosewood for the floors.  Some of the pillows have an animal motif with an elephant, often seen in Indian design. The rug is hand-knotted and made with hand-carded wool and viscose, by artisans in rural India.

I used other modern elements that I would not call “Indian style” for variety such as the coffee and side tables, lighting and dining table and chairs.

The Energy of Indian Style

The energy of Indian interior design radiates warmth and vibrancy through its rich colors and intricate patterns. It embodies peace and harmony through spiritual symbols, respect for history through traditional artifacts, and connection to nature via natural elements. The opulence is also evident in luxurious fabrics and metallic accents. In essence, this style is a blend of vibrancy, spirituality, cultural respect, natural connection, and luxury.

Your takeaway is that by changing some of the elements in your existing design, you can work towards creating a certain global style. Or you can have a mix of elements for a more “Bohemian Style”. More on that to come.

Create a Healthy and Beautiful Home with Aligned Design

Have the last few years made you rethink how you are living your life and what is important?

Has it highlighted all the things that are NOT working in your home if you have been spending more time there?

Have you realized what is important if you have required your home to act as your workplace, sanctuary, gym, school, and more?

Why not refresh, get inspired, and create a healthy, beautiful home that can handle all the things you need it to do for you now.

Imagine a home that looks great, feels great, and supports you so that you can be great:).

Aligned Design

My philosophy of great Interior Design, which I call Aligned Design, considers three key factors. These are art, science and energy. The intersection of the three is where the magic happens.

Aligning art, science and energy to make magic happen in your home and life.

Aligned Design is my holistic approach and philosophy of Interior Design, one that considers every layer of a space. There are three components, art, science and energy that create the perfect space for a person that truly support that individual in all ways.

Where as most designers consider the aesthetics and the function first, I consider energy as the foundation for everything.

What do I mean by art, science and energy?

The Art of Beauty – The art is the part that primarily makes your design beautiful, as well as the art on your walls. Beyond mere aesthetics, I am passionate about creating spaces that tantalize the senses, celebrating art and artisans, striking a chord with those who step into them because it creates an extraordinary sensory experience.

The Science of Color – Standing out in the realm of design, I harness a scientific approach to color. As Alaska’s sole certified color strategist, I employ a scientific approach to ensure every hue sings in harmony based on color science and not on guesswork or made-up undertones.

The Energy of Well-Being – I go beyond the visible, intuitively tuning into the energies of individuals and spaces. This unique insight lets me weave a tapestry where every design element resonates with its inhabitants. In addition, I create energy art to tap into expressing the essence of who you are when you are in alignment with who you are meant to be and also pieces that can support you and your potential. This energy art serves as the foundation for the art and science of your design. The energy I put into the designs along with the energy of your desires and aspirations creates a powerful energy in your space every time you see it.

Combine art, science, and energy, and what do you get? A touch of magic. Spaces that don’t just look or feel right, but that elevate and transform the space and you. Because when your space thrives, so do you. And when you flourish, the world around you does too. Remember, the world isn’t just better with you in it; it needs you to shine.

What if You Are Selling Your House?

What if you are selling your house? Byers will always be more attracted to a beautiful house than an ugly one. Data shows that the right colors can bring in more on your home sale. But energy….reading the energy of the home and staging it for the buyers that are meant to have that house, that is really the secret sauce. So art, science and energy work with home sales too.

Can I Use Aligned Design for Business?

The three also work in business where your design can attract your perfect clients, color can help you sell your product and energy is what will help you make your sales and keep your clients happy.

Let’s Get Started

A great plan lays the foundation for everything to come and saves you time and money. The best way to get a plan is to do an Aligned Design consultation with me.

Aligned Design- Create a Plan

Take Your Time

Creating a perfect space tailored to you is a process that requires time. Stay patient. It’s better to gradually buy items that you love and fit your plan as your budget allows. Avoid rushing to fill your home with “just okay” items to finish quickly. Such purchases might not last or satisfy you in the long run. Spending on what you truly love will ensure your space truly resonates with you.

Aligned Design- Take Your Time

Out with the Old

Begin crafting your ideal space by decluttering, making room for new experiences and items. Remember, less is more. Is your space so crowded that individual items can’t stand out? Are there items that bring you joy that deserve a special spot?

If you have more belongings than space to display them, consider storing some away. Rotate these items seasonally to keep your space fresh and dynamic. Remember, all those items contain energy. Is it all positive energy? If not remove it. Too many things cause a feeling of chaotic energy in your space.

Aligned Design- Out with the Old

Who Are You and Who Do You Want To Be?

What’s your story? What brings you joy? What are your aspirations in life? What activities do you love doing, even without pay?

It’s easy to fall for the allure of online room pictures and desire the same for ourselves. However, creating your perfect space involves telling your unique story. While these pictures can inspire, not everything will fit well in your home, or lifestyle, or complement what you already have. Instead, seek out items that hold meaning to you, give them a special place, and make them the centerpieces of your design.

Consider where you want to go in life and who you want to become. Your space should support you on this journey.

Take the time to reflect and figure it out, as it truly matters.

Energy art is a great way to express who you are and support you, in addition to providing a foundation for the rest of your design.

See my article, Tips to Design Wellness into a Spectacular Life for ideas.

Does it Bring You Joy?

Choose quality over quantity, even if it means spending more or taking longer to gather all the pieces you desire. Items you truly love will bring long-term happiness, while cheaper, less-loved items may lose their appeal quickly. Classic pieces will endure, while trendy items may fade along with your interest.

Remember, joy isn’t solely about possessions. It’s about connection—to yourself, your aspirations, nature, and the energy in and around your environment.

Utilize color, nature’s inspiration, energy art and Feng Shui to create spaces that offer a sense of well-being.

Aligned Design- Does it Bring You Joy?

Make Magic Happen with Color

Color can work wonders, influencing your mood and it’s easy to alter. A fresh coat of paint can dramatically change a room, and it’s affordable. Experiment with rich colors, even if just in a small space like a powder room.

Alternatively, use neutral colors on your walls and bring vibrancy with colorful accessories or art. Neutrals on walls and furniture allow you to change accent colors like pillows, artwork, and accessories whenever you want a new look.

Consider consulting a color strategist such as myself, who uses color science to choose the perfect hues that complement your existing finishes and furniture.

Aligned Design- Make Magic Happen with Color

Take Care of Yourself and the Planet

Consider eco-friendly natural materials when looking for furnishings, pillows, rugs, art, accessories, bedding and mattresses, paint and more. You will feel healthier and better in your space and it is good for the planet as well. See my article, Eco-Friendly Interior Design- Why it Matters,  to learn more.

Aligned Design- Take Care of Yourself and the Planet

Layer Your Lights

Add magic to a space with layers of light. Find beautiful fixtures that add overhead lighting, mixed with lamps at mid-level and task lighting. Accent lighting on art and under cabinets look great. Put all your lights on dimmer switches so you can control the lighting just the way you like it. See my article How to Make Magic Happen in Your Home with Lighting to learn more.

Aligned Design- Layer Your Lights

Look Great, Feel Great, Be Great

With Aligned Design, harmonizing art, science, and energy, you can cultivate a home that’s beautiful, vibrant, and both visually and energetically uplifting.

When your space is better, you are better. When you are better, the world is better. And the world needs you.

A space that looks, functions, and feels great while supporting your dreams contributes to your happiness, tranquility, and productivity, ultimately making the world a better place.

You’ll recognize an improved space by its enhanced beauty, reflection of your personal style, and narrative it tells. It feels more spacious, flows effortlessly, and its color palette is not just visually stunning but also emotionally evocative.

You’ll feel healthier while being kind to the environment, experience improved relaxation and sleep, feel more positive and productive, and enjoy a stronger connection to nature. Your space becomes a launchpad for your dream life, providing room for learning, silence, reading, exercise, and expressing your unique gifts.

You will sense these positive changes, leading to a heightened sense of well-being and motivating you to strive for your best.

Just imagine how wonderful that would feel!

Interior Design Is NOT About Looking Good

It is about looking great, feeling great and supporting you to BE great.

Aligned Design. Look great, feel great, be great

The common perception of Interior Design is that it’s purely about enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your home. Indeed, most Interior Designers will transform your house into a stunning space that is not only visually pleasing but also tailored to suit your lifestyle, ensuring that you feel content and proud when others experience it.

But great Interior Design is about so much more than looks, form, and function. It is about looking great, feeling great, and supporting you to be great.

When your space is better, you are better.
When you are better, the world is better.

Aigned Design- When your space is better, you are better. When you are better, the world is better.

Sound Familiar?

Homeowners, are you grappling with frustration over your home’s look and feel, striving to achieve harmony, and anxious about costly missteps? Is your space the tranquil haven you yearn for at the end of the day?

Business Owners, are you attracting the clients you desire, and is your revenue a reflection of the value you provide?

Home Sellers, are you currently selling your home, worried it might linger on the market, necessitating repeated price reductions and endless viewings instead of a swift, profitable sale?

The solution to all these challenges lies in the power of great design.

Aligned Design

My philosophy of great Interior Design, which I call Aligned Design, considers three key factors; art, science and energy. The intersection of the three is where the magic happens.

Aligning art, science and energy to make magic happen in your home and life.

“Art” encapsulates the essence of “Interior Design”. It seamlessly blends furniture, decor, lighting, finishes, color, and architecture to craft spaces that aren’t just visually appealing but also resonate with our way of living.

“Science” elevates this art. It employs the intricacies of color science to accentuate your design’s impact. Beyond aesthetics, colors influence our emotions and ambience. Through color science, we transition your space from appealing to breathtaking. Furthermore, science nudges us towards sustainable and eco-friendly choices, ensuring both personal wellness and planetary care.

“Energy” is the soulful connection weaving through each design element. It’s about introspection – connecting with oneself, one’s history, ambitions, and molding a space that nurtures growth and aspirations. It also involves harmonizing with the inherent energy of your surroundings (akin to Feng Shui) and cherishing nature’s touch (biophilia). This deep-rooted connection, further amplified by tailored energy art, offers an ineffable comfort and tranquility in the design.

Why You Need Art, Science and Energy Together

When you prioritize only two of the three crucial elements, you risk compromising the holistic harmony of your space. Think of it as enjoying a meal but missing a key ingredient; it’s satisfying but not quite complete.

  • If you focus on “Art” and “Science” (including color dynamics), your space might look stunning and function efficiently, but it might lack the soulful, personal touch and deeper connection that “Energy” can infuse.   Overlooking the “energy” aspect could affect your sleep, productivity, and connection to nature. By integrating biophilic elements, you not only connect deeper with nature but also align with your true self, fostering improved well-being, relationships, and positive global impact.
  • Emphasizing “Art” and “Energy” can create a visually pleasing environment that resonates personally, but without the “Science” of functional design and the proper use of color, it may fall short in practicality and sustainability.  Without the scientific understanding of color, a design might miss its full potential. Color, when applied with expertise, elevates a space from appealing to mesmerizing.
  • Merging “Science” (with its color considerations) and “Energy” can lead to a functional and emotionally connected space, yet it could miss the aesthetic flair and sophistication that “Art” offers. An eco-friendly home with vibrant colors contributes to well-being, but aesthetics and functionality are crucial too. An inspiring and beautiful environment uplifts your mood daily, while a space tailored to your lifestyle enhances comfort and enjoyment.

Simply put, sidelining one component can throw off the balance of your environment. For a truly harmonious and balanced living space, it’s essential to weave together the beauty of “Art”, the practicality and color science of “Science”, and the personal resonance of “Energy”.

Look Great, Feel Great, Be Great

My Aligned Design system brings it all together to work its magic. Whether it’s for your personal space, business, or preparing to sell, Aligned Design delivers exceptional results.

You’ll know it works when your space is a beautiful reflection of you, flows seamlessly, and inspires you with its colors. It’s healthier for you and the environment. You’ll feel better—relaxed, positive, and productive, aligned with your true self, and closer to nature. Your space motivates you to pursue your dreams and make a positive impact on the world.

Why Does it Matter?

Crafting a space that immerses you in beauty and color, and tuning the energy to promote prosperity, health, love, and authentic self-expression aligns you with the universe. This harmony enables you to live your best life, thereby making a positive contribution to the world.

When we inhabit spaces that uplift and support us, we contribute to elevating our collective consciousness.

When we all live in supporting and positive spaces, we can raise the collective consciousness.

Your Office is the Perfect Space to Relax and be Happy

It should be. You may already recognize that for many of us, our office, whether at home or work, often becomes a source of stress. How often do we associate work with enjoyment and relaxation?

Your Office is the Perfect Space to Relax and be Happy
Is your office space your happy place? It should be.

If you are like most people, you may have been working at home lately and your experience may not have been fun or relaxing. There are many things you can do to create your perfect office space at home.

An office is more than just its physical components like desks and supplies; it’s about harmonizing art, science, and energy to create the ideal environment. This space should empower you to do what you love, deliver valuable services, enhance lives, and be generously rewarded for your efforts.

Begin by reflecting: Are you pursuing your true calling? Is your work something you’d passionately engage in even without compensation? Does your profession uplift and enrich others? If so, your office should be a sanctuary of joy. If not, perhaps it’s time to design a workspace that nudges you towards that ideal while ensuring your current tasks are handled with ease and efficiency.

Your Office is the Perfect Space to Relax and be Happy
“Watercolor” Fractal Art and Edesign by Mary Ann Benoit, Northern Lights Home Staging and Design.

I learned alot about the path I was meant to be on as part of the Transformational Coaching Program with Jim Fortin (TCP) I am taking. It helped me determine how to take what I was already doing, Interior Design, and transform the work into something that supported me better.

Your Office is the Perfect Space to Relax and be Happy
“Watercolor” Fractal Art and Edesign by Mary Ann Benoit, Northern Lights Home Staging and Design.

How is your workspace arranged? Reflect on the room’s energy dynamics. Feng Shui principles, which often align with intuitive design, suggest avoiding a desk position where your back faces the door. Such a setup might leave you feeling uneasy, as if someone could approach unnoticed. Instead, position your desk to have a clear view of the door, but not directly in its path, preventing you from feeling overwhelmed by the room’s incoming energy flow.

Do you have a great view? Consider how you can “bring the outside in” to your office design. Make a connection to nature with your view, art, accessories or plants to feel more relaxed, happy, and connected.

Think about the hues gracing your space. Opt for colors you’re drawn to, with calming tones like blues and greens or neutrals for a tranquil work environment. For a more invigorating feel, pivot to bolder shades like reds, oranges, or yellows. Harnessing color science ensures a seamless blend with fixed finishes, furnishings, art, and external views. Without this precision, colors might appear pleasant but slightly misaligned, leaving an indefinable sense of discord.

Your Office is the Perfect Space to Relax and be Happy
A science based color consultation can get your colors perfect the first time.

Consider the art of what makes a good office space. Is your furniture beautiful, comfortable and arranged in a way it is easy to move in your space and access your tools and storage? Do you have storage that can hide away most of your work products so your space feels organized and clutter free? That contributes to feeling relaxed and happy, compared to feeling cramped and not knowing where things are or seeing papers everywhere.

Is the art on your walls meaningful to you? Does it make you smile to see it? Do you even have art?  What you see everyday affects your mood. Look for art, a mural or other décor that you love.

A Relaxed and Happy Office EDesign

This Edesign perfectly encompasses the principles discussed earlier, tailored for someone who hosts frequent client meetings.

The desk strategically faces the door but is thoughtfully offset for easy transitions between the desk and client seating. Ample storage solutions grace one wall and are discreetly concealed behind mirror doors, maintaining a clutter-free atmosphere. These mirrored surfaces also double as light reflectors, enhancing the room’s ambiance and showcasing the stunning view beyond.

The decor harmonizes a soothing mural in tranquil shades of green, blue, and purple, seamlessly integrated with custom-designed fractal art that complements the mural’s aesthetics. Natural elements, like the outdoor scenery, potted plants, clay pottery, and bird sculptures, further infuse the space with organic energy.

The room exudes a serene and inviting ambiance through its calming, joyful color palette, with vibrant hues balanced by neutral white and gold furniture, achieving a harmonious and peaceful atmosphere.

Are You Creating Expansion in Other People’s Lives?

Expansion is the thing that we all want. Expansion is a better life than we have now. It is something more, something bigger, something better. We are always striving for expansion.

Are You Creating Expansion in Other People’s Lives?

When people buy something, it is because it provides expansion in some way in their life.

One of the reasons Interior Design is important is it creates expansion. It is worth investing in.

Creating a perfect space for you gives you something more, a better life than you have now.

Are You Creating Expansion in Other People’s Lives?

If you have a business, creating the perfect space that attracts customers is key.  They come because they believe what you are offering is giving them expansion. It may be a better meal, a more luxurious room, an easier life or a more attractive look.

Are You Creating Expansion in Other People’s Lives?

If you are selling a house, home staging, which is like Interior Design for home buyers, creates an atmosphere that the new house offers expansion, or a better life than the buyer has now.

Are You Creating Expansion in Other People’s Lives?

Has the last year made you rethink how you are living your life and what is important? Maybe it is time for some expansion in your own life.

Have you noticed while spending more time at home that many things may not be serving you to create a better life?

Does your home serve you as your workplace, sanctuary, gym, school, or whatever you need it to be?

Imagine a home that looks great, feels great, and supports you so that you can be great:).

Creating a perfect space is important. Why wait?

How Aligned Design Creates Expansion

Interior design, especially when integrated with the principles of aligned design, plays a pivotal role in shaping our experiences, influencing our emotions, and improving the overall quality of our lives. Here’s how:

  1. Space Optimization: Efficiently designed spaces can make a room feel larger, airier, and more open. This spatial expansion can have a psychological effect, making inhabitants feel less confined or restricted.
  2. Harmonious Flow: Aligned design often emphasizes creating a harmonious flow within a space. When items and furnishings are positioned in a way that complements natural human movement and activities, it reduces obstacles and enhances functionality.
  3. Emotional Impact: Colors, textures, and patterns can all influence our emotions. For example, calming colors like soft blues or greens can reduce anxiety, while brighter shades might energize a space.
  4. Improved Productivity and Focus: A well-designed home office or study area can boost productivity by minimizing distractions and providing an organized environment.
  5. Health and Well-being: Incorporating natural light, plants, and elements of nature can improve air quality and bring about a sense of well-being. This connection to nature is often referred to as biophilic design.
  6. Personal Reflection: When our homes or workspaces reflect our personalities, values, and passions, we feel more connected to them. This personal connection can improve mood and create a sense of belonging.
  7. Safety and Comfort: Good design ensures that spaces are not only aesthetically pleasing but also safe and comfortable. Ergonomic furniture can prevent body strain, while proper lighting can prevent eye fatigue.
  8. Social Cohesion: Open-concept designs or communal areas can encourage social interaction and strengthen familial or communal ties.
  9. Flexibility for Life Changes: A design aligned with the inhabitant’s life can adapt to changes, whether it’s making space for a new family member or adjusting to a work-from-home routine.
  10. Enhanced Aesthetics: Beauty has an intrinsic value. Being in a space that is visually pleasing can elevate mood and enrich daily life.
  11. Sustainability and Longevity: Sustainable design choices ensure that the space is not only good for the inhabitants but also for the planet. These choices often lead to longer-lasting, durable design solutions that don’t need frequent updating or replacing.
  12. Power of Energy Art: Integrating energy art into interior design can be transformative. Energy art, often imbued with intention or inspired by certain frequencies, can act as a focal point that resonates with inhabitants, evoking emotions, memories, or aspirations. Such pieces can serve as daily reminders of one’s purpose, dreams, or spiritual journey, amplifying the energy in a room and facilitating personal and spatial expansion. When art is more than just decorative, but carries a deeper energetic resonance, it can catalyze introspection, motivation, and a profound sense of connection to the broader universe.

In summary, interior design, particularly when it’s aligned with the specific needs and lifestyles of its inhabitants, can create a profound impact on daily life. It goes beyond mere aesthetics, deeply influencing our emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. Combined with other elements of aligned design, energy art can amplify the holistic benefits of a space, making it not just aesthetically pleasing but also spiritually enriching.

Are You Creating Expansion in Other People’s Lives?

Get the Look

This Edesign I created of this beautiful bedroom is an example of expansion. This bedroom is relaxing, yet happy and inspiring. It brings the outside in. It is eco-friendly. It provides a  calm and relaxing retreat or sanctuary to spend time in front of the fire with your special someone. This design could be for a homeowner, or for a business if you had a hotel or Bed and Breakfast. It is also a beautiful example of how a bedroom could be staged if you were selling the home. In each case, it shows an example of a better life and appeals to people’s emotions.

Aligned Design

My philosophy of great Interior Design, which I call Aligned Design, considers three key factors. These are art, science and energy. The intersection of the three is where the magic happens.

Aligning art, science and energy to make magic happen in your home and life.

Interior design is not just about arranging beautiful furnishings or picking attractive colors; it’s a blend of art, science, and energy.

  • Art: This is the creative aspect we often associate with interior design. It includes selecting furniture, decor, lighting, and architectural details to create a cohesive and appealing space tailored to one’s lifestyle.
  • Science: This brings a higher dimension to design, especially when considering color. Instead of just relying on personal preference, using color science ensures that the hues in a space not only look good but also evoke the desired emotions. Furthermore, understanding eco-friendly and sustainable design options means creating spaces that are both beautiful and responsible.
  • Energy: This is about making deeper connections. It’s tying the design to personal stories, aspirations, and the surrounding environment, including elements of Feng Shui and biophilia. When a space resonates on this level, it elevates the overall experience from just being in a room to feeling truly connected to it.

In essence, a truly transformative space considers all these pillars holistically, aligning them perfectly to create magic in design.

Healthy Home-Feel Good with Biophilia

Our intrinsic desire to connect with nature and living entities is encapsulated in the term “biophilia.” Coined initially by Erich Fromm and later popularized by Edward O. Wilson, this concept has found a renewed emphasis in contemporary interior design.

Throughout history, our bond with nature has been pivotal, not only for sustenance and survival but also for spiritual rejuvenation and inspiration. Nature, in all its splendor, offers a plethora of colors, shapes, patterns, and textures that have always intrigued our aesthetic senses. Beyond the visual delight, nature nourishes our well-being. Plants, for instance, not only beautify our spaces but purify our air and offer sensory pleasures. Similarly, our reverence for animals can be traced back through art, religion, and their cherished presence in our lives as companions.

My personal journey as a wildlife biologist for 33 years, trekking the terrains of Arizona and Alaska, deepened my appreciation for nature’s designs. Be it the intricate patterns of plant parts under a microscope or the harmonious color schemes, I’ve often been inspired by nature’s unparalleled creativity.

In an ever-evolving technological world, the essence of biophilia reminds us of the solace nature provides. So, the question is, how can we bring this comforting connection to nature into our homes through interior design?

Natural Materials

Opt for eco-friendly and sustainable materials in both your construction and interior design choices. Discover more in my article on Eco-Friendly Interior Design. Embrace nature by integrating unique finds from your outdoor excursions – think branches, rocks, or shells – into your home decor. Elevate your space with indoor plants that not only beautify but also purify. Enhance your home’s synergy with the outdoors by strategically landscaping visible from your interiors. Design outdoor sanctuaries that beckon you outside. Seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces with design choices and window placements that frame nature as living art.

For example, in this office design, the focal point is the desk area. The focal point is a combination of the hot pink desk and unique green fractal art on the wall behind, creating an area with drama that harmonizes with the dramatic outdoor view and colors. The focal point draws you into the room but also extends your focus outdoors at the same time.

Plants

Incorporate native plants in your garden to not only attract local wildlife but also ensure sustainability. These indigenous species are tailored to thrive in local conditions, ensuring they’re resilient and eco-friendly by preventing the spread of invasive species that could harm native ecosystems. On my Alaskan adventures, I’ve handpicked native perennials like wild roses, blueberries, and geraniums, which beautify my garden, attract wildlife, and even offer delicious treats. Indoors, adorn your space with houseplants that enhance aesthetics and purify the air. Choose flowering varieties for a burst of vibrant color!

Animals

For many, including me, a home feels incomplete without the affection of a pet. Their presence greatly enhances our overall well-being. When designing interiors, consider pet-friendly choices that not only facilitate but celebrate life with animals. Opt for durable upholstery and washable rugs to minimize pet-related wear and tear, reducing any stress that may come with adding a furry friend. Moreover, cultivate an outdoor space that’s both visually pleasing and teeming with life. Plant flora that captivates the senses and invites wildlife. Thoughtfully positioned plants near windows can provide natural ‘entertainment’, as you watch birds, butterflies, and pollinators drawn to your garden.

Color

  • Incorporate nature’s hues into your home’s interior and exterior. As a certified color strategist, I’ve often drawn inspiration from the landscaping colors of clients’ gardens, converting them into paint shades for walls, front doors, or interior palettes. Think of the calming blues of the sky, lush greens, earthy browns, muted grays, and soft off-whites. Highlight with vibrant shades inspired by garden blossoms in pinks, purples, yellows, and reds or the autumnal tones of foliage like golds and oranges. While stark black and pure white are rare in nature, they can accentuate and uplift these natural shades. And remember, if a color dominates your view—even from a neighboring property—it’s worth integrating into your decor palette.

In this home the color of the front door was created from measuring the colors of the roses in front of the house. The home is adjacent to the ocean, so the exterior color and metal art of sea gulls connects it to the surroundings. Color palette by Northern Lights Home Staging and Design.

Art

  • Get great photos of your outdoor adventures that evoke the feeling you had while you were there for art.
  • Consider art that shows landscapes, plants, animals or other natural elements that bring you joy and work with your design and color palette.
  • Incorporate energy art that connects energetically and spiritually to nature.

Scents

Scents can have a huge impact on the way you feel.

  • Try a diffuser with natural oils of lavender, orange or other scents related to herbs or fruits to make the connection through smell.
  • Flowering plants add a beautiful scent to your indoor space.
  • Avoid products that emit harmful odors.

Lighting

  • Use full spectrum bulbs to get the quality of natural daylight, especially in northern climates where light can be very limited in the winter. Living in Alaska, I can personally attest that they work and affect your mood.
  • Lots of strategically placed windows provides an abundance of natural light.

Even amidst urban sprawl, it’s entirely possible to forge a natural sanctuary in your living space. Let’s explore how I transformed rooms with views of nothing but an adjacent brick building into rejuvenating havens. By leveraging earthy tones like greens, blues, and browns, incorporating artwork showcasing flora and fauna, and introducing real plants, I managed to evoke a “feel-good” ambiance that resonates with the calming embrace of nature.

Embracing the Blues: Timeless Innovations in Interior Design and Energy Art.

Love blue? It’s no surprise.

Blue is a universally favored color, and its appeal is deeply rooted in psychology, biology, and cultural associations. Here’s a look at why people are drawn to blue and its energetic essence:

  1. Calm & Serenity: Blue is often linked to calmness and serenity. It evokes feelings of tranquility, much like a clear blue sky or a serene lake. This calming effect can be particularly pronounced in lighter shades of blue.

  2. Trust & Reliability: Blue is commonly associated with trustworthiness and reliability. This is one reason why many businesses and institutions use blue in their logos and branding.

  3. Depth & Stability: The color symbolizes depth and stability, reflecting foundational elements like the deep sea and the expansive sky.

  4. Intelligence & Wisdom: Blue is also linked to intellect, wisdom, and clarity.

  5. Nature & Universality: Blue reminds us of nature, specifically the vast sky and the oceans. These universal elements resonate with many people regardless of where they come from.

  6. Coolness & Refreshment: Being a cool color, blue can evoke feelings of refreshment and cleanliness.

  7. Spirituality & Order: In many cultures and religions, blue has spiritual significance and is seen as a color that denotes order and divinity.

  8. Communication: Light blue especially is linked with communication, expression, and empathy.

Energetically, blue is connected with the throat chakra in some spiritual traditions, which governs communication, truth, and expression. Its energy is one of soothing, healing, flowing communication, and deeper inner journeys. See my Throat Chakra collection of energy art here.

The appeal of blue is multifaceted, grounded in both its natural ubiquity and its vast range of cultural, psychological, and spiritual connotations.

Stories of the Future

Blue’s universal appeal and versatility make it a favored choice in commercial products, from fashion to paints. Its range, from deep navy to soft sky blue, fits various styles and moods. Industries gravitate towards blue due to its consistent popularity, its ability to evoke trust and calmness, and its adaptability across seasons and trends. As a result, products in blue hues cater to both aesthetic trends and deep-rooted emotional connections consumers have with the color.

What’s in it for you? With the prevailing popularity of blue, you’ll find an abundance of home decor options in this hue, ensuring effortless harmonization in your interiors. The Blues

My “The Blues” fractal art collection draws inspiration from Alaska’s breathtaking palette of blues, manifesting in the sky, water, and icy expanses. The state showcases a mesmerizing spectrum, from deep ocean blues to the ethereal glacial blue – a shade that remains elusive to photographs. Our lakes often shimmer in a unique turquoise, tinted by glacial silt. The accompanying photo offers a glimpse into Alaska’s rich tapestry of blues.

The “Sea”

Another fractal art series of mine is called “the Sea” because it reminds me of the ocean with white caps on a cloudy, windy day. I see the ocean from my house here in Seward Alaska, and we have plenty of wild windy days! Looking at the white caps is an indication of whether the boats will go out each day and how sea sick you might get! The colors of the ocean change with the light.
